Fishing

When I was a young boy growing up in Michigan, weekends were frequently spent renting a small boat fishing for bass. I absolutely love the tranquility of being on the water hunting for fish. Yet, in Michigan, “keepers” are hard to come by, usually we would catch small bluegills and simply let them go.

Florida fishing is a completely different sport!

Depending on the time of year, would dictate the type of fishing would be successful. My favorite is fishing for Tarpon in the spring. Tarpon fishing typically is done out of a boat floating just offshore. But I like the excitement and challenge of fishing for Tarpon out of a Kayak. Most people think I am crazy to fish for a hundred pound plus fish out of a little kayak, but I like the excitement.

The process is relatively simple but it involves an awareness of how to spot Tarpon and when to make the perfect cast.

Usually, I grab my kayak and launch from the beach around 6:00 am when the gulf waters are calm. I bring with me two Penn pods already rigged for quick action when a Tarpon is spotted. I have the second rod just in case the line on my primary rod gets broken, which happens frequently. In addition, I use crabs for bait, which will swim around and slowly sink to the bottom of the gulf, usually about 14 feet in depth. The key is to cast the bait in front of the Tarpon, as they head south, parallel to the shore line. Lastly, I allow the Tarpon to fully eat the crab before I set the hook. When this occurs, expect a huge fish to go airborne and race away pulling hundreds of feet of fishing line. The adrenaline is unimaginable, and the reward is simply to see the Tarpon explode out of the water and hopefully spit the hook to release by itself.
